Dissident Republican Group Claims Responsibility
Off-duty Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell of the Police Service of Northern Ireland was shot multiple times in Omagh on the evening of 22 February 2023. The New IRA, a dissident republican group, has admitted to carrying out the attack.
Three Charged with Terrorism
Officers investigating the attempted murder have charged three men with preparatory acts of terrorism. The investigation is one of Northern Ireland's biggest in recent times.
Victim Survived Previous Attack
Detective Chief Inspector Caldwell survived a previous attack in February 2022. He was shot and injured by members of the Continuity IRA.
